When to Replace
- Ghost Flushing: The toilet tank refills periodically when not in use.
- Running Water: A constant sound of water trickling into the bowl after the tank has filled.
- Slow Leak: Water level in the tank drops below the overflow pipe over time.
- Material Degradation: The flapper feels slimy to the touch or leaves a black residue on fingers, indicating the rubber is breaking down.
- Improper Seal: The flapper appears warped or no longer sits flush against the valve seat.
Installation Tips
- Shut off the water supply valve behind the toilet and flush to empty the tank.
- Remove the old flapper by unhooking the ears from the overflow pipe pegs and disconnecting the chain from the trip lever.
- Clean the flush valve seat with a soft cloth to remove mineral deposits or debris that could prevent a proper seal.
- Attach the new flapper ears to the pegs and adjust the chain length; there should be approximately 1/4 inch of slack when the lever is at rest.
- Turn the water back on and perform a test flush to ensure the flapper lifts fully and seals tightly without catching on the chain.
